Watermelon Tourmaline Crystal Group
Cruzeiro Mine
Near Governador Valadares, Minas Gerais, Brazil

The Cruzeiro mine has been known for its consistency of quality, since the early days of its accidental discovery by Brazilian and American prospectors during the 1940s who were searching for high quality mica to aid WWII efforts. It is from this premier mine that this highly desirable museum grade specimen originates. The present example, with a large triangular crystal, has classic striations yet exceptional luster to the sides. Subtle graduation of color from blue green at the top to pink and green again at the base, with a deep red core when the base of the crystal is viewed. one can see that there is facetable quality material to the interior. A cluster of two smaller conjoined crystals appears to one side. Height 5 1/2 in tall by 2.5 inch diameter on main crystal. Provenance: Ex Joseph A. Freilich Collection. $40,000
